Applications of lime products

From purifying the water we drink to the air we breathe it is used as a cleaning agent for the environment that we live in

Steel Industry

The steel industry, specifically the production process, makes extensive use of limestone. Limestone is utilized in this procedure to absorb and then remove impurities from the steel metals. Limestone often reminds people of cement and buildings. However, this article has given you insight into the range of applications for limestone. Far from being a building material, it also serves as a foundation for many other significant goods.

Paper Industry

CaCO3 stone powder used in the paper industry The use of minerals in papermaking has long been known, kaolin and clay are the main raw materials used as fillers in papermaking, but the cost is high while calcium carbonate is abundant in nature. However, the price is lower but the whiteness is higher. In the paper production environment, which is usually an acidic environment, using calcium carbonate to change it into a neutral medium becomes an alkaline environment, which is very good for paper production.

Chemical Industry

Limestone is a useful raw material in the chemical industry as well. It is used to neutralise acidic soil so that the plants grow in an effective manner. a chemical feedstock for the production of lime used for cement (an essential component of concrete), as aggregate for the base of roads, as white pigment or filler in products such as toothpaste or paints, as a soil conditioner, and as a popular decorative addition to rock gardens

Road Building

Lime is used in stabilizing the in place- soils or aggregate used in road building. Hydrated Lime helps in forming an impermeable base thereby reducing the chances of seepage of rainwater. i.e. for road surfaces prone to regular traffic or congestion. Lime also acts as a mineral filler which increases the viscosity of the binder, increasing the stiffness, tensile strength, compressive strength and resistance to water stripping. Asphalt is currently used for the majority of road networks throughout the world. Infrastructure is often dependent on the quality of road surfaces, and without its superior materialistic properties, roads would be more hazardous and all types of vehicles would be prone to damages and accidents.

Leather Industry

Liming is a process used for parchment or leather processing, in which hides are soaked in an alkali solution. It is performed using a drum and paddle or a pit. Its objectives are: Removal of interfibrillary proteins.Tanning chemicals include calcium hydroxide, sodium sulfide, sulfuric acid, formic acid, hydrogen sulfide, aniline-based dyes, and solvents (dichloromethane, benzene, ethanol, tetrachloroethane, trichloroethylene). Finishing chemicals include formaldehyde, aniline, nitrocellulose, and resins.

Flue Gas Treatment

Lime and limestone play a significant role in the removal of pollutants from the flue-gas streams of coal-fired power plants, incinerators, boilers and industrial facilities.Lime is used to remove acidic gases, particularly sulfur dioxide (SO2) and hydrogen chloride (HCl), from flue gases.Powdered Calcium oxide (CaO) or calcium carbonate (CaCO3) can both be used to remove sulfur dioxide. Both calcium oxide (lime) and calcium carbonate (limestone) are alkaline substances that can be used to remove the acidic sulfur dioxide from flue gases.

Sugar Industry

Hydrated lime (calcium hydroxide) is vital to the production of sugar from both sugar cane and sugar beets. Primarily used in the sugar industry for pH correction, it's also used to remove impurities and colour from the sugar solution during sugar refining.Quicklime increases the pH of raw sugar juice from a natural acid level (pH 5.0 – 6.5) to a neutral pH of 7. The addition of lime serves to precipitate out impurities found in the sugar, resulting in a purer, cleaner final product.

Dairy Industry

Some farmers may choose to apply granulated lime compared to ground lime, and while more expensive, it has a quicker response. To dose calcium deficient cows, fine ground lime can be added to maize or field cereals at a rate of 50 -300g per cow per day or add to feed at a rate of 60 – 120g per kg of feed on a wet basis.

Paints & Pigment Industry

Whitewash, or calcimine, kalsomine, calsomine, or lime paint is a type of paint made from slaked lime (calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2) or chalk calcium carbonate, (CaCO3), sometimes known as "whiting". Various other additives are sometimes used.Limewash painting is achieved when water and pigment are added to hydrated lime to form a paste-like consistency before it is applied. Soil amending: Adding basic hydrated lime to acidic soil stabilizes the pH for superior plant growth.

Agricultural Uses

As previously stated, limestone formations are mainly composed of calcium carbonate. As a result, this chemical can indeed be mined for use in agriculture. Typically, this mineral is broken down into smaller pieces and generated in a variety of qualities. Ultimately, these compounds are marketed as "agricultural lime," which is used to counteract the soil's acidity while also liberating soil elements such as phosphates.

Lubricant

Used during Plastic extrusion as a lubricant in petroleum refining and also lubricating grease manufacturing process,Quicklime can be used as a component of continuous casting lubricants, and slaked lime as a lubricant carrier in wire drawing.

Glass Industry

Limestone and lime are the fluxing materials for glass. There is no substitute for liming materials in glass when color is important. The soda makes the glass water-soluble, soft and not very durable. Therefore lime is added increasing the hardness and chemical durability and providing insolubility of the materials.

Construction Industry

Limestone has been utilized in construction and ornamental stones since prehistoric times. The Taj Mahal, a beautiful marble monument in Agra, illustrates limestone's use in creative endeavors. Limestone remains utilized in a variety of construction projects. It is more appropriate for this function because of its climate resilience and visual appeal. Flooring, window frames, stairways, and other items are among its construction uses.

Water Treatment

Lime is extensively used to treat municipal waste waters and industrial liquid wastes. In wastewater treatment plants (both urban and industrial) Hydrated Lime and Quick Lime are widely used for correcting the pH balance of acidic water, for precipitating heavy metals and phosphates, and for its flocculating action. Lime is widely used for stabilizing industrial residual sludge or dredging sludge and for treating urban biosolids before agricultural re-use or incineration. In addition, lime is used to treat soils polluted with hydrocarbons.

Pharmaceutical Industry

Lime is widely used in the manufacturing of most calcium- based pharmaceuticals. It is used in the pharmaceutical industry to manufacture antacids, tablets made of base materials, and other similar products. It also helps in getting rid of the spinal problems, such as rejuvenation of the spinal cord and its related part and improvement in its functioning. Even, it has the power to restore and relocate the broken bones.
